Our Team
Rachel Phillips
Hi, I’m Rachel Phillips, Thomas’s sister and founder of The Thomas Effect. Losing my brother the way we did turned my life upside down. In recovery myself, I had considered working in the field, but it wasn’t until losing him, and seeing firsthand how broken and stigmatized our system still is that everything changed. I went back to school, finished my degree, earned my counseling certification, and I’m now on my way to full licensure.
I created The Thomas Effect to change the way we talk about addiction. To end the stigma. To educate. To support multiple paths to recovery. To make sure no one has to fight this battle alone. The foundation of this work, the heartbeat behind it, is the same foundation my brother lived by: compassion, strength and humor along with an undeniable coolness that made everyone feel like they belonged. I truly believe this would have been his mission if he were still here. He’s passed the baton and we’re running with it.

Michelle Longoria
Hi, I’m Michelle, the behind-the-scenes gal making sure things run smoothly around here at The Thomas Effect. I help coordinate our events, manage donation drives, assist with outreach, and take care of the day-to-day details that keep us moving forward. I work closely with Rachel (our fearless founder and my sister-in-law), and I’m honored to support her vision every step of the way.
Thomas was my brother-in-law, and his loss shook our whole world. While I haven’t personally struggled with substance use disorder, I’ve spent most of my adult life surrounded by people who have. I’ve seen the pain, the strength, the setbacks, and the hope. I’ve always had a heart for outreach, and now I use my voice and my skills to help carry this mission forward, for Thomas, and for all the others still fighting or lost too soon.
The Thomas Effect isn’t just a name, it’s a movement rooted in compassion, strength, and connection and I’m proud to be part of it.
