Changing the way the world sees addiction
Educate. Empower. Redefine Recovery.
Why We Exist
Inspired by the life of Thomas Alex McConatha, The Thomas Effect is a movement to open minds, soften hearts, and end the stigma surrounding Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and its treatments and to spread awareness about the fentanyl crisis that is stealing lives at an unbelievable rate. We educate and advocate for families, for loved ones, and for those suffering with this devastating disease.
Fentanyl Doesn’t Care How Good Your Kid is.
It doesn’t care if this is your first time experimenting or if you’ve been clean for years. It doesn’t care if you are a high achieving student, a parent, a professional or someone fighting to survive. It doesn’t care how much you love your family, or how badly you wanted to make it. It doesn’t even care if you meant to take it or not. Fentanyl doesn’t care about intentions and it doesn’t wait for a rock bottom.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid up to 50 times stronger than heroin. It’s the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18 to 45. Because fentanyl is powerful, cheap and easy to get, it’s replacing drugs like heroin and is showing up in fake pills and in party drugs like ecstasy. Many people don’t realize they are taking it making it the deadliest drug in America today.
This isn’t just about addiction. Its about awareness, because right now fentanyl is touching lives across every neighborhood, every age group, and every background. If you think it can’t happen to your family, you’re exactly who needs to keep reading.
The Fentanyl Crisis
Stockings for Pine Street Project
It all started with Thomas.
While working in the treatment industry, Thomas and his colleagues began a simple but meaningful tradition, filling Christmas stockings for men in inpatient treatment. It was a small gesture, but it reminded people during a difficult season that they were seen, valued, and not forgotten. After we lost Thomas, Stockings for Pine Street became one of the very first ways we chose to honor his memory and continue the compassion he showed to others. What began with a single treatment facility, Pine Street, has grown into something much bigger than we ever imagined.
In 2025, thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we delivered more than 600 stockings to seven inpatient treatment facilities, serving men, women, youth, and veterans. We also distributed hundreds of stockings to members of our homeless community here in Fort Worth, Texas. In addition, we were able to provide hygiene bags, special gifts for teenage boys in treatment, and doggie bags filled with food, treats, and toys for the beloved pets of our unhoused neighbors This year, our goal is even bigger: 1,000 stockings, along with hygiene bags, gifts, and pet care packages.
But this is about so much more than a stocking. For some of the people we serve, this may be the only gift they receive during the holiday season. The stockings may be filled with snacks, socks, toiletry items, and ChapStick, but what truly fills them is love, hope, and compassion. Every stocking sends a message:
You matter. You are not forgotten. Someone cares about you.
Our hope is that when a stocking is delivered or when someone empties it and discovers what's inside, they feel that love and compassion pouring out with every item.
Be Part of the Mission
We can't do this alone. Whether you donate supplies, sponsor stockings, volunteer your time, or make a financial contribution, you become part of bringing hope and kindness to individuals and families who need it most. Together, we can make sure that someone facing homelessness, recovery, or hardship experiences the joy of being remembered this holiday season.
