The Meaning Behind Name

The Thomas Effect has a dual meaning:

• What started as a tribute to Thomas Alexander McConatha, The Thomas Effect carries forward the impact he made through his recovery, leadership, service, compassion, and ability to influence others.

•The Thomas Effect also reflects the Thomas theorem: the idea that when people define situations as real, those beliefs can create real consequences and real change.

• For us, The Thomas Effect means helping people recognize their worth, believe that a different future is possible, and gain the support and tools needed to create that future.

Why We Exist

Inspired by the life of Thomas Alex McConatha, The Thomas Effect began as a movement to open minds, soften hearts, and end the stigma surrounding Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and its treatment. Today, our mission goes beyond awareness and advocacy. We educate communities, support individuals and families, raise awareness about the fentanyl crisis, and empower people to build lives of purpose, hope, and recovery.

The Thomas Effect is what happens when people are given the support, tools, and encouragement to recognize their own worth, discover new possibilities, and create meaningful change in their lives. Through peer support, recovery resources, reentry services, education, and community connection, we help people move from surviving to thriving.

Fentanyl is changing the drug supply and awareness can save lives. Learn the risks, know the signs of overdose, carry naloxone and spread the word.
